My biological Ouma used to wake up at 3am every morning to bake 5 kgs of rusks. She drove my Oupa mad because she only had a domestic oven, and he forever had to repair it. I admired her tenacity and, of course, being a South African……. Who doesn’t love a good rusk?
Since young, I used to struggle to open my mouth for the large, bulky rusks and even the modern sliced rusks sold today were a challenge….and so, the idea of Ruskit was born. A rusk that could be enjoyed without unhinging your jaw to do so.
As a sales representative, I used to leave in the early hours of the morning to travel long distances and by midmorning I was so hungry, I would literally eat anything I could lay my hands on……which often ended up being cheese rolls or takeaways.
I wanted Ruskit to be easy to enjoy with or without a hot cuppa that could be eaten anywhere…. that was healthy and made with good quality ingredients.
And the final cherry for me was the packaging. I never enjoyed the pouches that would be sealed with a sticky label that almost never retained their ‘stick’ and finding an airtight container to house the rusks was a mission. So, whilst the resealable pouches are pricey, they are definitely worth it!
So, you can take your pouch of Ruskits with you to enjoy anywhere……in a tent or in the bush or on a mountain somewhere……. now wouldn’t that be delightful.
